Whiskey Shivers is playing in Chicago at Schubas Tavern this Friday, April 24th.
Guitarist/Vocalist Jeff “Horti” Hortillosa stopped to chat with us about what the high energy bluegrass band has been up to lately.
Schubas Tavern, 10pm (21+)
3159 N. Southport Ave
CLC: Where does the name Whiskey Shivers come from?
JH: The name was given to the band by a friend, it’s that post-whiskey-shot shudder that shifts the body into party mode.
CLC: We hear you played around 20 sets at SXSW! How did you manage that?
JH: They say that South By SW falls somewhere between a labyrinth where one can lose their mind and a grueling gauntlet that will turn the body into a squishy sack of pulverized bone. Luckily, we have a great management team that always had Gatorade and orange slices between sets.
CLC: You guys are known for your stage energy. Is that intentional or does that just come natural?
JH: Once we get on stage, when the music gets going and the crowd is right there with us, its only natural to become a conduit for that energy.
CLC: Do you have any pre-show rituals?
JH: Light plyometrics, both static and dynamic stretching, a group count up to 6, and whiskey of course — sometimes it’s malort.
CLC: Are you excited to play in Chicago? Have you played here before?
JH: We f***ing love Chi-cah-go. We’ve had some great crowds in great rooms. We first played at Reggie’s with Larry and his Flask and Scott H. Biram, and that was wild. Since then we’ve played Schubas, and have done shows in the greater area in Elgin and Evanston. We’re coming back to Schubas we are absolutely pumped.
